The race is run in memory of Alan Ballantyne, who sadly died aged only 18 years old. Alan died when out running with the Elswick Harriers one evening. Following his passing his family sold his bike and other cycling equipment, and used the money to purchase The Ballantyne Memorial Trophy. Alan was a talented and popular member of The Tyne Olympic Cycling Club.

Riders are to assemble at 10.50am at the exit from the Cricket Club grounds..

At 10.55am the race safety briefing will take place.

At 11.00am the short neutralised section will begin.
Route
Riders are to turn left onto the B6343 westbound, riders are to give way in the neutralised section, The race will begin proper after about 250 metres by lay by. The race then continues west on the B6343 to Dyke Neuk at Dyke Neuk go straight on i.e continue in a westerly direction, 400 metres past Dyke Neuk near the Public Telephone an intermediate sprint will take place. Then Continue through Hartburn (caution required) and Scot’s Gap to Cambo. Here turn right onto the B6342 to head in a Northerly direction to Harwood Gate. Here turn left onto unclassified road to head in a North Westerly direction past Winter’s Gibbet To Elsdon. Riders should exercise caution through Elsdon. At the end of the village green riders are to turn right onto the B6341 and onto prime at Bilsmoor. Caution require on Descent of Bilsmoor. Continue on the B6341 in an easterly direction to Flotterton. Here turn left onto unclassified road. To head in a North westerly direction to Sharperton. Skirt the western edge of Sharperton just after the Coquet bridge turn left onto unclassified road to head in a westerly direction. Continue to skirt the southern edge of Holystone village then onto T junction at Swindon. Here turn right back onto the B6341 but now in a westerly direction. Continue to prime at Bilsmoor. Then continue to Elsdon, riders are to exercise caution at the bends in Elsdon. At the start of the village green riders are to turn left onto unclassified road. Continue to Prime at Winter’s Gibbet, then continue in a south easterly direction to Harwood Gate. Here turn right onto the B6342 to head in a southerly direction. At Cambo turn left onto the B6343 to head in an easterly direction. Continue through Scot’s Gap, Hartburn (caution twisty road) to finish on the B6343 100 metres east of the entrance to the Mitford Estate(Cricket Club). Approx finish time 1.30pm.
Please note: No hard shell helmet no ride. There will be no neutral service and following cars are not permitted. Please note rider signing on will close at 10.40am prompt, at this stage a decision will be made on which reserves get a ride.

The winner of the prime on Winter’s Gibbet, also wins a Gibbet Cake Kindly donated by Marion and Alan Graham, of The Elsdon Cyclist’s Café/Tearoom.
Please note primes may be omitted, if the race is short of prime judges on the day.
The first three riders over each hill prime (Bilsmoor(outwards),Bilsmoor (return)and the Gibbet) will be awarded points. 3 points for 1st, 2 points for 2nd and 1point for 3rd place on each prime.
The Ballantyne Trophy is run not to make profit. When the race accounts are finalised any excess money will be given out as posted prizes. People apart from designated officials are not to park in the grounds of The Cricket Club instead they should park in the field opposite the cricket club.
Litter is not required either in Mitford, or discarded on the course of the race. Any complaints regarding the race should be made in writing, and should be addressed to the event secretary, Christopher Gray, Bothiebrigg Cottage, Charleston, Nigg, Aberdeen, AB12 3TP.
