Assorted Barnesbury Riders

Welcome to Barnesbury CC

Sunday Club Rides

From Sunday 15th January:

Update! - Sunday 29th Jan - Possible No Ride. Geoff, Jason and Brian are off to Hetton Lyons Park to race in the last NECCL Cyclo Cross Race of the season, so Geoff won't be leading a ride. Other members are welcome to meet as usual, however there is no designated ride leader, or definite ride - It all depends on who turns up.

Meet at the entrance to Seaton Burn Recreation Ground (note change of venue - the Drift Inn has been knocked down), at about 0900h for 0910 departure.

Riders from North Shields/Whitley Bay area can gather at the Cannon in Earsdon village before riding to Seaton Burn: meet at 0830 for 0835 departure.

Rides will be typically be 2 to to 4+ hours from Seaton Burn but we expect riders will pull out or carry on further than the rest  of the group, depending what suits them and how far they may have ridden to the rendezvous point.

Low to moderate intensity (typically British Cycling/Association of British Cycling Coaches training  zone 2).

No group cafe stop will be planned, (except on the very longest rides) so that riders can complete the ride and have the afternoon free, though riders can,of course, leave the group for their own cafe stop.

Mudguards are recommended, particularly for wet days when those without can expect to be banished to ride in the spray at the back of the group.

Any questions, please contact us

Calling All Trail Builders

Volunteers are being recruited for building an offroad skills course in Gallagher Park, Bedlington sometime in early 2012. The aim is to develop an easy to build course to improve rider’s skills whatever your starting age and ability.

A meeting will take place in January with volunteers with Barry Wilson from Northumberland CC to discuss design ideas and requirements before the build which will be over a weekend or two depending on volunteer numbers (work is likely to take place after the winter March/April being the eternal optimist to allow the necessary forward planning to take place).

If you are interested contact the club via the website for more details and we will contact people closer to the time about the details of the meeting.

Barnesbury achieves Club Mark Status!

On 26th November the Barnesbury Cycling Club were awarded their Sport England Club Mark award by British Cycling North East Development Officer Dan Small at their annual awards dinner. The certificates were warmly received by club coach Steve McIntosh and President Ben Walton. Steve said "the award illustrates the club's commitment to develop pathways into cycling for young riders in South East Northumberland, giving parent’s confidence from the guaranteed standards of excellence in our activities."

Steven Pearson from Northumberland Sport said “The accreditation is a great achievement, as they are only the second club in the county to achieve the award from British Cycling. The volunteers at Barnesbury have been able to continue the development of the club and access wider support from British Cycling and the Northumberland Sport to achieve the status of being a Club Mark club. It is also a big achievement for the County as a whole with Barnesbury becoming the 100th club to achieve accreditation in the cross sport national programme.”

The club is looking forward to 2012 and developing coaching and sporting opportunities in cycling throughout the year to leave the Barnesbury's very own Olympic legacy in the Bedlington area.

Cyclo-Cross Season is Coming!

In the North East this year there will be two Cyclo Cross Leagues running with an extensive series of events. The North East Cyclo-Cross League is ran under TLI regulations and their season consists of 8 rounds, beginning on 11th September at Whickam Thorns in  Gateshead.  CXNE which is ran under British Cycling Regulations, will be running a massive 15 round season starting on the 4th September at Kirby Stephen.

Whichever series you choose (and many ride both), you will be guaranteed a great race. Cyclo-Cross is an excellent way into cycle racing and excellent winter training. The races  consist of hour long, off road races, and whilst you will be faster on a specific cyclo-cross bike, mountain bikes are more than welcome. The races are cheap fun, ideal for kids, beginners and uber athletes alike, and even if you get dropped you are still in the thick of it.

Over the next 4 weeks, NECCL are running an Autumn mini-series, so if you fancy a go before it gets too muddy, then get yourself along.

Barnesbury will be promoting two Cyclo-Cross races this season, one TLI and one BCC. Both events are at Gallagher Park. Check out our races page, or the respective Leagues websites for more info.

The biggest event of the Cyclo-Cross season and the traditional opening event is the 3 Peaks -a 40-odd mile world of pain. Barnesbury members Jason McCourt & Geoff Turner will both be competing.

Saturday Club Runs

 Dear All,

Please note

Please note that the Saturday club runs will now start from 2.00p.m. and meet at Jim's Cycles in Bedlington from the 6th August.

Thank You.

I have had some interest in saturday afternoon club runs, and i have decided to re-introduce the fortnightly Saturday afternoon club run.  Runs will run on weekends when there is no youth coaching in Gallagher Park.  Therefore there will be a club run this Saturday 29th January 2011. I have decided to move meeting place from Bedlington to the village of Stannington, meet in the carpark which is adjacent to the Ridley Arms public house/Village Hall.  These rides will not be fast and are to cater for youth members (12 years and older),  Everybody over the age of twelve years are welcome, please note these runs are on the open roads(quiet lanes), and are not classed as coaching activity.  Runs will be of a distance 25 to 30 miles.
On the membership front more good news to report the club welcomes to its ranks, Edith McIntosh (stephen's daughter).  The club also welcomes as second claim members Daniel Holmes, Sam Holmes and Alan Holmes.  John Cann the club welfare officer is now also a second claim member of the club.  I hope to see you at Dinnington, Stannington or Bedlington in the near future.  If you have ordered a CTT handbook through myself can you please remind me who you are, as i have lost my list and i have handbooks now.

Kind regards,
Christopher Gray (secretary. The Barnesbury Cycling Club)

Club Tens

Dear All,

Just to let you know the Barnesbury Cycling Clubs series of ten mile time trials start again for 2011, on the evening of Wednesday the 13th of April.  The tens will be run on the course which starts just north of Bassington Roundabout (Cramlington).  The course proved to be very popular last year, its the course that goes to the Three Horseshoes, then back to Plessey Checks, then back to the shoes and plessey.  Many good times were recorded on the course last year.  Signing on is in Nelson Park, near the junction of Nelson Way and Colbourne avenue.

View BCC Club 10's 2011 in a larger map

You have to be aged twelve years to compete.  All club (CTT registered) cyclists welcome and if you are not a club cyclist the races are  run under the try it scheme.  So you can have a go anyway.  Entry is still only £2, what a bargain.  If you are reading this message and you happen to be a Barnesbury Member, there is no club night at Dinnington on Wednesday the 6th of April, look forward to seeing everyone at Nelson Park on the 13th.

Kind regards,
Christopher Gray (secretary. The Barnesbury Cycling Club)

Old Member Dies

I am writing now to let you know of the sad demise of another member from days gone by - Doug White - at the age of 88. Doug saw active service in the RAF in WW2 and returned to the Club on his demob. An enthusiastic road man, rather than track, he put up many good times, without ever reaching the highest levels. An enthusiastic Club man, one of his many contributions was trhe formation of the Barnesbury Bubbles - a concert party that provided rich, if somewhat ribald, entertainment at our annual Xmas festivities and which went on tour to spread sweetness and light to lesser mortals - light ale, mostly, and some did end up quite mortal. Ah, well. Another of the oldies gone. Not feeling too good myself - though I do get up on the high fells around Keswick on a regular basis - alas, sans bike. My best regards to current members, young and old.

The funeral will be held at St Mary's church in Ponteland at 1.15p.m. on the 1st June 2011.

Yours till the chain-oil freezes

Presidents Run 2010

A dull grey day but no rain saw  a small but enthusiastic band of brothers meet at Kenton Bank Foot and set off to the Hill Climb venue of Sandhoe near Corbridge. The pace was fast owing to a tail wind and the absence of Janis Wildsmith, who usually tries to rein in the pace to that which she is comfortable at.

After a brief stop at Matfen for ablutions we all set off and on arriving at Sandhoe completed our freewheel competition, which was won, again, by Stephen McIntosh, who, if he hadn't braked would have ended up at Hexham as he crested the rise after the downhill part, which usually slows everybody else. This in itself is a record. Perhaps aided by his expanding waistline?

The casual hill climb at Sandhoe was attempted by a small band of intrepids, who struggled to the top by various methods. Pete Manners thought it would be a hoot to snap his gear cable and attempt the hill in a 39x11 gear(he walked).

Paul Murphy was the fastest, and the fastest Barnesbury  man was Andy Hale again. Well done all.

The lunch stop was held at Acomb village hall and was superbly catered for by Rob and Pat Nichol who provided the tea and by Alan Wilson and Christine who brought along a great selection of cakes, which made struggling up the hill out of Acomb  afterwards an even bigger grind.

The Barnesbury Cycling Club are promoting a Go Cross event on the afternoon of Saturday the 8th of May 2010, at Gallagher park, Bedlington.  The event consists of an under twelves race, a youth race (12-16 years), and a novice/junior/womens/vets race.

For those  not familar with Go Cross events they are entry level competition, designed for people have not raced before.  Therefore they are an ideal place to start.  So if you have youngsters keen to start biking why not come along and have a go.  The regulations state you can use any type of bike as long as it is in good working condition.  You will need a helmet.  These are off road events, for people not familar with cyclo cross.Further details available from the British Cycling website.  You don't have to be a BC member to compete. The event complements what the Barnesbury are already doing in Gallagher Park.

Fortnightly coaching sessions are now up and running, next session saturday the 27th of March at 1.15pm (Gallagher Park).  And on the other saturdays the barnesbury are holding club runs, approximately 2 hours duration at a steady pace.  There is a policy however that under twelves can't attend club runs.  this is due to safety constraints, but any seniors, juniors or 12 to 16 years old are most welcome on club runs.

The Barnesbury Cycling club is a youth developement club(Go_ride Club) a scheme set up by the British Cycling Federation.  The club has relevant child protection procedures in place, etc., etc.  So if you are a young rider living in South East Northumberland, the Barnesbury is the club for you.
